1984 by George Orwell

喬(qiao) 治·奧威爾（1903—1950），英國偉(wei) 大的人道主義(yi) 作家、新聞記者和社會(hui) 評論家，著名的英語文體(ti) 家。《1984》是奧威爾的傳(chuan) 世之作，堪稱世界文壇最著名的反烏(wu) 托邦、反極權的政治諷喻小說，為(wei) 反烏(wu) 托邦小說類三部代表作之一（另外兩(liang) 部是《我們(men) 》和《美麗(li) 新世界》）。

奧威爾在小說中創造的老大哥、雙重思想、 新話等詞匯都已收人權威的英語詞典，甚至由他的姓衍生出奧威爾式 （Orwellian）、奧威爾主義(yi) （Orwellism）這樣的通用詞匯，不斷出現在報道國際新聞的記者筆下，足見其作品在英語國家影響之深遠。對於(yu) 這部天才而富於(yu) 洞見的著作，再說任何話都隻能是多餘(yu) 的。每個(ge) 人都自會(hui) 在書(shu) 中找到共鳴。

1984年的世界被三個(ge) 超級大國瓜分，三個(ge) 國家之間戰爭(zheng) 不斷，國家內(nei) 部社會(hui) 結構被徹底打破，均實行高度集權統治，以改變曆史、改變語言、打破家庭等極端手段鉗製人們(men) 的思想和本能，並用高科技手段監視控製人們(men) 的行為(wei) ，以對領袖的個(ge) 人崇拜和對國內(nei) 外敵人的仇恨維持社會(hui) 的運轉。

讓人暈頭轉向的開卷第一句，"四月裏的一個(ge) 陽光明媚冰寒徹骨的日子，時鍾指向十三點"，定義(yi) 了現代暴政的獨特表征。主角溫斯頓（Winston Smith）的職業(ye) 是"真理部"的審查員，為(wei) 了適應國內(nei) 當前的政治需要和風雲(yun) 變幻的國際聯盟，天天篡改曆史。他和他的同事被全麵監視和全麵領導的"老大哥"圈養(yang) 在一個(ge) 被控製的單位中。

在《1984》的故事裏 ，電視屏幕監視著每個(ge) 人，人人相互監控，相互告密揭發。今天的社交媒體(ti) 也正是在收集我們(men) 的每個(ge) 舉(ju) 動，記下我們(men) 買(mai) 了什麽(me) 東(dong) 西，在網上發表了什麽(me) 言論。監控在我們(men) 生活中無所不知無所不在，它甚至可以預測我們(men) 下一個(ge) 選擇。模擬消費者的選擇，用戶才是正被推銷的商品，而服務於(yu) 政治目的而收集起來的這些數據，眼下就在扭曲民主的真實含義(yi) 。

Course Description

Throughout this course, students will spend time reading, writing, analyzing, and discussing George Orwell’s monumental text, 1984. This course will analyze the bleak dystopian future that Orwell portrays in his novel and compare this fictional work with modern and historical events, people, and governments. Students will refine and develop their thematic analyses, focusing on themes of individualism, social class disparity, and the abuse of power. The class will also spend time analyzing technology, surveillance culture, and form opinions on the present and future of our society. The course will blend elements of analytical, creative, and persuasive writing while also enhancing speaking and listening skills.
