Government should spend money on railways rather than roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

The debate of how government should spend money has never ceased. People take diverse attitudes towards this issue. To me, I disagree with the statement that railways should be given more priority over roads in government budget. This essay will elaborate on my view and come to a tenable conclusion.

Admittedly, the railways do make a contribution to people’s life to some extent. The primary advantage lays emphasis on its role in increasing efficiency of travelling, especially for domestic journey. Evidence has shown that the train is ranked the most frequent used transport which is less likely to delay by weather compared with flights and have no risk of road congestion. Apart from that, safety is another important reason worthwhile to mention while considering the lives lost in traffic accidents on roads every year.

However, despite the benefits mentioned above, highway traffic appears to be a more attractive and affordable alternative to railways. Let’s first begin with comparing the two options from financial aspect. In contrast to the investment in a railway along with its various supporting facilities, construction of a road is not only cost effective but also time-saving, not to mention the subsequent maintaining cost. Taking this advantage one step further, we can forecast the potential value of building roads in stimulating other industries. Far from being a simple infrastructure, a highly developed road system will pave the way for an era of “life on wheels”, in which almost every family will be more likely to own a private car, thus making excursion a popular lifestyle consequently, which will eventually lead to a boom for both automobiles industry and domestic tourism.

In conclusion, from what has been discussed above, though the benefits of railways cannot be ignored, I am profoundly convinced that its development should not be at the cost of roads, and the authority ought to give equal consideration on both realms.
