While economic achievements have become the sole pursuit of many governments nowadays, there are still some people who stick to the traditional view that a comprehensive development of a country should not be limited to economy. To me, I am with the view that there are many areas need to be improved by governments.

For those with blind worship of economic development, the material advance is lauded as a feather in their caps. It is undeniable that the prosperity does bring many advantages. The primary dividend is the stable employment that comes with it, which is also the most practical benefit to the youth. On the contrary, suppose that in a society with high unemployment rate, the juvenile delinquency caused by poverty would have been far beyond the government’s control. Also, another blessing brought by the development lays emphasis on infrastructure, as the prosperity allows for investment in sectors as traffic and housing, which in turn, will reward every citizen in the country.

However, such economic determinism has already provoked the discontent of critics, when quite a few appeal for more concerns from the authority on other areas of public service. The first sector deserving more consideration is education, especially in the contemporary world prevailed with money worship whereas traditional values as trust and honor are fading. Under such circumstance, the government’s investment in education is particularly crucial in cultivating moral value for the young generations. Another field we should not forget is social welfare. Once shifting our eyes from glamorous cities to the impoverished villages, we could see millions of people leading miserable lives behind superficial prosperity. To them, concrete financial aid grabbed in their hands is more practical than grandiloquent economic index in news.

In conclusion, though the value of economy cannot be absolutely denied, I am profoundly convinced that economic advancement is too narrow an area for governments to concentrate on.
