Do you think that playing sports is less important now than in the past?

No, I don’t think so. In fact, I’d say the opposite is true. You know, more young people today are struck with age-related diseases, such as arthritis, gout, heart disease and diabetes. A major contributing factor in this disturbing situation is that people nowadays are either rushing off their feet all day or too sluggish to exercise. And without a doubt, playing sports is a cheap and easy way to maintain good health - regular workout boosts people’s immune systems, helps them get better sleep and aids their recovery. Apart from that, regular exercise does wonders for people’s mental health. Considering that people nowadays are under virtually intolerable pressure - bank loans to pay off, rising living costs to bear and so on, actively getting involved in sports, be it indoors or outdoors, offers people a channel to let off steam and give vent to negative feelings. In this way, they’re less likely to suffer from low spirits, depression, insomnia, and all that.

How can people be encouraged to take part in more sports?

Well, motivating people to be more active isn’t a walk in the park, but a bunch of measures are worth trying. One of the effective ways, as I see it, is to build more sports infrastructure in the neighbourhood. Let me elaborate on that. Many people may have realised the importance of physical activities, but are discouraged from doing sports due to long distances to a sports venue, fat membership fees in gyms and fitness clubs, or trying to avoid making noise at home. Residents will be tempted to go outdoors and do a bit of sports if more free sports facilities are available to them, such as football fields, basketball courts, badminton courts, cycle paths, skating rinks, and swimming pools. We can see this with Denmark, where cycle lanes are well-organised and convenient. Danish people have long been crowned as cycling enthusiasts. Similarly, in major cities like Chengdu, local governments have not only converted disused areas into a cycling route along the river but have added more parks to the community. Therefore, you can see that more parents take their children outdoors to cycle on weekends and youngsters skateboard, play badminton or jog in their neck of the woods.
