Some cities have vehicle-free days when private cars, trucks, and motorcycles are banned from the city centre. People are encouraged to use public transportation such as buses, taxis, and metro on vehicle-free days. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

People are becoming increasingly aware of the pollution and traffic congestion problems caused by vehicular pollution. In many cities, therefore, vehicle-free days are observed, during which private vehicles are not allowed in city centers, and only public transportation and bicycles are permitted. In my opinion, there are more advantages to such measures than drawbacks.

There are numerous advantages to banning private vehicles from city centers on certain days. Firstly, it benefits both the environment and people’s health. Since vehicles are the primary source of local pollution, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, which both increase the temperature of a city and cause various diseases, banning them could help reduce the particulate pollution that causes asthma and lung disease. Secondly, less traffic means enhanced productivity and safety on the road. To further explain, the absence of private cars prevents people from wasting time in traffic jams, and they can use this time for work or study. Furthermore, fewer vehicles mean fewer car accidents and ensure safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Admittedly, there are certain downsides to banning privately owned vehicles in city centers. First, banning personal vehicles can cause problems in emergency situations. Private cars are convenient, especially for medical emergencies or any kind of situation requiring a quick response. However, enacting a rule that allows private cars to enter the city centers in emergencies would solve this problem, and without traffic congestion, private cars could travel more efficiently. Secondly, some people argue that a single vehicle-free day cannot solve the long-term pollution problem and is therefore a waste of effort. However, the existence of vehicle-free days has served to raise people’s awareness of transport and environmental issues.

To sum up, it can be reiterated that the observance of vehicle-free days in city centers has more merits than downsides. Closing city centers to cars, even for one day a year, would help people address chronic problems like pollution by making the switch to alternative transportation gradually.
