外刊中值得背誦的句子

在本專欄中，我會從經濟學人等英文外刊中選取適合背誦的句子進行賞析。這一期選了幾個關於學曆和高等教育的句子。

1 Today, having a degree is usually an entry requirement for many jobs.如今，擁有大學學曆通常是找工作的門檻。

entry requirement加入/進入的條件，entry requirement for many jobs在這裏可以理解為(wei) 找工作的門檻。其中，entry是enter的名詞形式，常用作entry into sth。可以在這句話的基礎上進行改寫(xie) ：

Today, having a master's degree is a prerequisite for entry into many professions in China, such as doctors and high-school teachers, and it is increasingly the case for some lower-skilled jobs.如今，擁有碩士學曆是進入我國某些行業(ye) (比如醫生和高中老師)的一個(ge) 必備條件，而且對於(yu) 很多技術水平更低的工作來說也日漸如此。

【補充：本科學曆：a bachelor's degree | 博士學曆：a doctoral degree】

表示門檻，也可以用threshold for sth，比如下麵這句話：

2 A university education is increasingly seen as the threshold for a well-paid job.大學學曆逐漸被視為(wei) 高薪工作的門檻。

3 In Britain, too, many see a university degree as an essential first step into the world of work these days.在英國，很多人也將大學學曆視為(wei) 如今進入職場的關(guan) 鍵的第一步。

an essential first step關(guan) 鍵的第一步。step後麵也可以接towards+目標。如：

Obtaining a higher degree is an essential first step towards achieving professional success.獲得高等學曆是實現事業(ye) 成功的關(guan) 鍵第一步。

4 As degrees have become more common, their importance as signalling devices is rising.隨著學曆變得更加常見，學曆作為(wei) 能力證明方式的重要性正在增加。

signalling device表明...的方式。在這個(ge) 語境中，可以理解為(wei) 表明能力的方式（a way of proving qualifications）。如今很多大公司通過學曆來對應聘者進行初篩，就是將學曆作為(wei) 一個(ge) signalling device。其中，device表示方式；手段。

再比如，我國的中考就是a sorting device(選拔方式/給學生分類的方式)，即：a device to sort students into academic schools and vocational ones(將學生分為(wei) 走學術路線和走職業(ye) 路線兩(liang) 部分)。

sth's importance as sth表示某事作為(wei) ...的重要性。作主語時，可以與(yu) 動詞rise/decline搭配，表示重要性增加/降低。再比如：The importance of physical buildings as the workplace has declined amid the pandemic.實體(ti) 建築作為(wei) 工作地點的重要性在此次疫情中有所下降。

5 So far, university degrees have been a reliable proxy for skill but this may change as artificial intelligence starts taking jobs away from white-collar workers.迄今為(wei) 止，大學學曆一直是技能的可靠代表，但隨著人工智能開始從(cong) 白領工作者手中奪走工作崗位，這種情況可能會(hui) 改變。

proxy for sth表示...的證明。proxy for skill就類似於(yu) 上麵的signalling device。除此之外，還可以用indicator(標誌)，常用作a adj indicator of sth：

Educational qualifications have been a reliable indicator of one's competencies.教育資曆已經成為(wei) 了證明個(ge) 人能力的可靠標誌。
