SAT英文詞匯難點解析

1. Our company is five hundred strong. ≠ 我們(men) 公司是500強。

strong一詞，說來容易，其實艱難。因為(wei) 該詞意義(yi) 超過10個(ge) ，比較複雜。下列句子中strong的用法十分特殊，值得細究：

1)The crowd at the rally was 200 strong.

2)Iraq indicated that it would establish its own army 800,000.

3)Some army troops nearly 100,000 are stationed in that country.

4)Our team of volunteers is 50 strong and still growing.

平心而論，以上4句中strong的這一用法不太常見，但是SAT2022年的試卷上竟然考查這一小點！所以，考生在備考時切不可存有僥(jiao) 幸心理！切記題無巨細，皆須複習(xi) ！

在這一用法中，strong一定是放在一個(ge) 具體(ti) 的數字之後，而絕不是數字之前，意為(wei) having a certain number。所以， Our company is five hundred strong. ≠ 我們(men) 公司是500強。而是，“我們(men) 公司有500人。”

1. to that end ≠ 到那一端

SAT中有太多真題考查過渡詞或詞組，最頻繁出現的是however, moreover, consequently, furthermore, as a result, in short, therefore等等。這些詞或詞組本身幾乎都沒有什麽(me) 難度，關(guan) 鍵在於(yu) 考生要充分理解上下文。

一個(ge) 有趣的現象是，筆者注意到，to that end這一過渡詞組已經是多份試題中的正確答案。但是，不無遺憾的是，不少考生由於(yu) 不熟悉to that end而與(yu) 正確答案失之交臂。那麽(me) ，to that end究竟何意呢？試看：

1)He wants to cut costs, and to that end is looking at ways of cutting the company’s operations.

2)Power requires the ability to play with appearances. To this end, you must learn to wear many masks and keep a bag full of deceptive tricks.

3)To this end, I am more than willing to make any sacrifices.

以上3句中，最重要的是如何吃透end一詞的意思。end用作名詞，詞義(yi) 繁多，在to that end中， end意為(wei) aim/purpose。所以，to that end ≠ 到那一端，而是“為(wei) 了達到那個(ge) 目的”。
