Even though many of my family members live thousands of miles apart from each other, we have done everything from sharing knock-knock jokes to talking about a movie we just watched. Just as our love for one another connects us, our genes do as well. Alhough many traits that show up in these genes are desirable, there are many undesirable traits as well, including a high predisposition to cancer.

Cancer has afiected the lives of many of my relatives across generations on both sides ofmy family. It seemed that with every year came a new diagnosis. However, the fear that accompanied my realization of our genetic proneness to cancer quickly tumed into curiosesity, and then a fuel for my passion of researching better and more effective treatments for this merciless disease.

Having cancer run through my family means that I have first-hand experience of the effect a diagnosis can have on a patient's family, When my aunt was diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer, I leamed that chemotherapy and radiation is grueling and painful for a patient and their family. The nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and anemia appalled me. How could this treatment be the only option? With nearly two million diagnoses in 2018, that meant a lot of chemotherapy and pain. This realization pushed me to look further into altemative forms of treatment.

After some searching, I came across the term “immunotherapy," which used the power of the human body's immune system to kill cancer cells. This type of treatment caught my interest, as it addressed the use of genetics in medical treatment. My familial background of cancer has led me to want to help solve the problem of finding better treatment options for cancer in the form ofimmunotherapy, which I will explore in an intemship this fall at UC San Diego. In the fiuture, I would like to research the effects of immunotherapeutic treatment of cancer, to see ifour immune system can beat this disease.

At Caltech, I will share my family's story to inspire my peers as they spend long hours conducting research and studying biochemical pathways. My family's story will remind them that their inventions and discoveries will have a direct impact on ordinary people who know nothing about genomes or thermodynamics. Together, my peers and l can find more efiective treatments and solutions so that next generations can not just survive, but thrive.

The lights dim. The smell from today’s lunch (pizza) is still present. The spotlight nearly blinds me. Everyone just thinks I’m a nerd. I am. Everyone sees me as the kid with the perfect SAT score who takes too many AP science classes. In class, I’m often shy because I know that some of my classmates misunderstand me. But what they don’t know is that when I get home, I prepare for my secret life as a standup comedian.Every Friday afternoon, our school has an open mic in the cafeteria. Most students sing, play “cool” instruments like guitar and drums, or perform small skits. When I get on the stage for the first time ever, no one knows what I’m about to do. Roberto isn’t in choir, they think. He doesn’t play an instrument in the band, they think. He isn’t an actor, they think. I take a deep breath and wait.

While many of my classmates take private lessons to pursue their arts, my parents don’t have the same resources, so I watch video clips of my favorite comedians online: Ali Wong, Michelle Buteau, Jared Goldstein, Hannibal Buress, and Donald Glover. Sometimes I even take an hour-long bus to downtown Los Angeles to see the up-and- coming comics. My jokes are usually about growing up Guatemalan American in a rich suburb that is predominantly white, so seeing how comics in Los Angeles navigate the country’s diversity fuels my own work.

I stare at my classmates and take a breath. “So my sister’s boyfriend is white and doesn’t speak Spanish well,” I pause. “But we love him anyway,” I say, with some sass that surprises the entire room. I deliver joke after joke, some of them landing so well that the entire room erupts in laughter. Others flop, and that’s okay too.As I get off the stage, everyone applauds and whistles. I might be a nerd, but I also have a voice.

My friends and I watched as our code spun out of control, crashing the computer in front of our AP Computer Science teacher. We all laughed uncomfortably, knowing that we’d forgotten to close one of our loops. When we began to debug the code for our final AP Computer Science project, we realized that someone had made a mistake with an “if” statement, causing our code to go on forever.

Coding on a team is equally exciting and challenging. The larger the project, the more component parts there are. When there are more component parts, one can’t simply act alone. A group of individuals must work together to build the smaller parts, and finally, as a team, put them together. If one piece is missing, the entire project fails. Because this was the first time any of us had crashed a computer, we all learned to be more cautious moving forward.

At Caltech, I want to struggle through code with my peers. I am especially interested in working on projects with CAST (Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies). Through a project with CAST, I could work with a team that includes experts in computer science and mechanical engineering, bridging the gap between software and hardware. I have always been interested in drones, robots, and other gizmos. However, I am eager to become part of the team that creates the software to control them, which requires a deep understanding of how coding languages can be used in tandem with complex machines.

My peers in Mechanical Engineering and robotics will help me understand how their contraptions work, while I will offer insight on how coding languages can be used to help their machines perform surgery, travel across the Pacific Ocean, take videos of Pasadena from sky, deliver packages to soldiers in remote areas, or assist forest rangers in finding a lost hiker. The possibilities are endless.

In my ROP Manufacturing Engineering Technology Course, I’m learning about the application of math in manufacturing. We’ve worked on isometrics, including drawing the different views of a 3D object and solving the missing dimensions. Now, I’ve begun learning g-code for CNC mill programming: first linear interpolation then circular interpolation. I’ve loved thinking through what a machine would do step by step, and I feel great accomplishment when my program finally runs correctly. I wrote a program to carve out my own design of a camera with a heart in the lens. Currently, I’m learning Mastercam CAD/CAM software. I can’t wait to take the Advanced course in the Spring semester to further pursue engineering fundamentals.

At the Biotechnology Open House at Santiago Canyon College, I participated in gel electrophoresis, separating red, blue, and purple dyes by running current through the gel with the buffer solution. The purple dye separated into two bands of blue and red. Observing that the red moved farther than the blue, I concluded that the molecules were smaller and moved through the gel quicker. After learning that electrophoresis is even used to separate DNA, I had the opportunity to extract DNA from my cheek cells. I was amazed to see my own genetic blueprint in a tube! These experiments excited me to learn more about how biology and engineering can create pharmaceutical, diagnostic, and environmental products to benefit society.

In honors physics, our lab groups competed to get the highest power output from wind turbines. Our group won through experiment and iteration, changing resistors from parallel to series (surprisingly, the least resistance doesn’t yield the highest power!) and switching the number, angles, and shapes of blades. In the future, I want to work to create more efficient blades on wind turbines to create more energy with the least amount of wind speed possible. As an engineer, I’ll need to understand the foundations of green energy to learn ways of improving renewable systems. I am enthralled by the promise of a carbon-free world.

Why are Siri, Alexa, Cortana, and Google Assistant all female? Because women are often just seen as “assistants”. Society has made some progress, but women still make up only 25 percent of STEM workers.

Last year I was chosen as my school’s delegate to California Girls State. Among other things, the program brought to light to me how big the gender gap really is. Women are underrepresented at every level in STEM--and the higher you go, the greater the gap. Like myself, many of the other delegates are pursuing careers in STEM, and we helped each other understand the importance of having a supportive community of intelligent, empowered young women.

Inspired by Girls State, I’ve become more proactive in my school and community. As Vice President of the Angel Heart Club this year, I’ve worked to recruit new members, helped organize and run meetings, and guided others on how to craft the cards we make to send to children with congenital heart disease in China. I also continue to volunteer at the hospital, helping to discharge patients, deliver food, and transport x-rays from radiology to the ER. But since Girls State, I’ve begun to take greater initiative, volunteering to cover other people’s shifts and taking on tasks that others are reluctant to, like running the tea cart to support nurses and doctors.

At Caltech, I would like to join Women in Physics, Math and Astronomy (WiPMA), which offers a similar supportive community. There, I will listen and interact with female scientist guest speakers, and build confidence and skills alongside my female peers. I hope to join Engineers Without Borders because I am interested in designing and implementing sustainable engineering projects. After working with the H20 for Life Club, I am aware of the global water crisis and would love to get involved in the current project of establishing a spring water source protection system that will help provide clean water for about 300 households in the surrounding Ilam District of Nepal.

I would also like to get involved in Caltech Chemistry Club, demonstrating my love of chemistry and inspiring young children about the wonders of science. I would also like to listen to faculty members discuss career options in the field of chemistry and the yearly guest speaker talk about current innovative chemical research.

I want to be the boss, not just an assistant. I believe Caltech can help.

為(wei) 什麽(me) Siri、Alexa、Cortana 和 Google Assistant 都是女性?

(Women in Physics, Math and Astronomy,WiPMA),它提供了一個(ge) 類似的支持性社區。

A stack of 146 comic books sit in my closet, the oldest one dating back to the ‘80s while the most recent issue was released a month ago. I’ve been on my Marvel comic collecting journey since I was 12, drawn in by the intriguing writing of Stan Lee and Brian Michael Bendis and the eye-popping art of Jack Kirby and Alex Ross. Usually after finishing hours of homework, I dig through my smorgasbord of books and pick out one that I’m in the mood for. Should I reread the Civil War storyline? Nah, too political; I’ll have to rant to my friends for the 99th time in a row about how Iron Man’s stupid mistake of trusting Miriam Sharpe cost the whole superhero community’s reputation . What about Kraven’s Last Hunt? I’m too tired to cry now. Daredevil: Man Without Fear? Perfect.

No matter whether I’m scanning pages of Uncanny X-Men #467 or reveling in Amazing Spider-Man: If This Be Destiny...! under the light of my desk lamp, the thrilling sensation of being pulled into each panel and waiting for the upcoming punch or roundhouse kick is unbeatable. Yet beyond the stories and wacky characters, comics are a platform of progressivism, illustrating how no matter what race, gender, or religion one believes in, anyone can be a superhero.

Though I might not have the marvelous singing skills of the X-men’s Dazzler, I definitely shred the ukulele better than she does. Music has been a large part of my life, and playing the ukulele has always brought me joy. This 2 foot long, 1 foot wide instrument has captivated me ever since my cousin gifted me one for my 8th birthday; its four strings of A, E, C, and G fabricate up to 220 (12choose3) different 3-note chords when thrummed with the correct fingering. While I do perform at my school’s coffeehouses and strum pop songs for my friends and me to sing along to together, I mostly play for myself, learning from YouTube tutorials and sometimes writing my own music.

I often find myself sitting on my bed plucking out tunes; occasionally I’ll strum “Hey, Soul Sister” after a heart-warming dinner with my family, bust out “Riptide” after a night-out with friends, or “Hey There Delilah” after a rather stressful school day. Maybe the next new song I’ll learn is “Hail CIT”.
