8 月兩大美國網申係統開放 Coalition 推出大學申請新平台

8 月將近，美國大學申請兩(liang) 大網申係統，Common App 和 Coalition App，又要開放了。

Common App 每年 8 月 1 日開放。Coalition App 原為(wei) 常年開放，但因為(wei) 不斷有負麵反饋，先後有學校退出。今年 1 月，Coalition 宣布，停止使用現有係統。將與(yu) Scoir 合作，在 8 月，推出網申新係統，使申請流程更為(wei) 簡化。

Scoir 是很多學校和升學顧問已經在使用的升學輔助平台。原 MyCoalition 申請人賬戶信息將不能自動轉入。

陪孩子經曆過大學申請的家長，肯定都有體(ti) 會(hui) ：

填寫(xie) 申請本身，真是一個(ge) 龐大、瑣碎、而複雜的過程。

需要填入的信息有：個(ge) 人信息、家庭信息、課外活動、成績、推薦信、申請文書(shu) ，選擇學校……每所大學要求的內(nei) 容不同，早申、常規申請截止日也各有不同。

每一次遞交之前，都要反複查看。不能有語法錯誤，不能有錯別字，不能漏填錯填。申請夢校，在這些基本要求之外，還要再上好幾個(ge) 台階。

孩子神經崩不住，家長也一直提著心。孩子常做的噩夢之一是，忙了幾個(ge) 月，終於(yu) 填好了。然而，在截止日最後一天，係統卡住，無法提交！！！

這樣的噩夢，年年都有現實案例。

去年申請季，11 月 14 日， Coalition App 因調試速度，導致係統故障。申請人不斷收到錯誤提示，無法填寫(xie) 信息。直到當晚 10 點才得以解決(jue) 。

恰好，11 月 15 日，是 University of Washington 華盛頓大學申請截至日。華大沒有另外的早申以及其他“晚申“機會(hui) ，所有申請，都需要在這個(ge) 截止日之前遞交。

並且，華盛頓大學是當時接受 Coalition App 申請的 165 多所大學中，唯一一所隻用 Coalition App， 而不接受 Common App 等其他係統的大學。申請人沒有其他途徑可以遞交。

Coalition 和華大立刻收到大量申請人以及升學顧問的焦急詢問。

最後，華盛頓大學不得不把截止日延長一天，改為(wei) 11 月 16 日。

今年，就在 2022-2023 申請季開放前夕，華盛頓大學宣布，停止使用 Coalition App。2023 秋季入學申請，改用 Common App。冬季申請，改為(wei) 學校自己的網申係統。

The  UW is pleased to announce we intend to accept the Common App for freshman applicants applying for autumn quarter 2023. Winter quarter applicants should plan to use the UW application. Watch this space for more information prior to September 1. Additionally, the UW will not accept the Coalition application for the autumn 2023 application cycle.

不隻華大，近年陸續有其他大學退出 Coalition，包括達特茅斯、波士頓大學、德州大學奧斯汀分校等。關(guan) 於(yu) 更改係統，學校一般隻注明接受哪個(ge) 係統申請，連華大那一小段注釋都沒有。不仔細對比，不容易看出，這原本是個(ge) 重大決(jue) 定。

像很多行業(ye) 一樣，有了問題，就有新的解決(jue) 方法出現，也有新的競爭(zheng) 者加入。家裏的孩子可能隻申請一次，就不會(hui) 再碰這些係統。大學申請領域的技術應用，主要是被眾(zhong) 多大學、高中、校內(nei) 校外的升學顧問們(men) ，不斷推動才更新發展的。

Coalition App 全名為(wei) The Coalition for College，大學聯合申請係統。它的創立始因，正是因為(wei) 行業(ye) 領先者 Common App，曾在 2013 年申請季頻繁發生故障，導致申請人無法填寫(xie) ，錯過截止日，無法遞交申請。

除了係統故障之外，當時很多大學以及升學顧問，對於(yu) putting all the applications in one basket 所有申請隻能通過一個(ge) 係統遞交的現狀表示擔憂，希望有替代選擇。

於(yu) 是，80 所學校美國大學，包括藤校、斯坦福、密執根大學等，聯合起來，於(yu) 2015 年推出新的網申係統 Coalition for Access, Affordability and Success。很快，參與(yu) 學校數目上升到 140。

對於(yu) Common App 的另一個(ge) 不滿是，係統限時開放。申請人需要在很短時間內(nei) ，填寫(xie) 大量個(ge) 人資料，難免無法全麵而有效地突出自己的優(you) 勢。於(yu) 是，這 80 所學校聯合決(jue) 定，保持係統開放。申請人可以從(cong) 9 年級開始，不斷填入申請內(nei) 容。

Coalition 的推出，為(wei) 行業(ye) 打了一針興(xing) 奮劑。當時的預期是，Common App 很快就要被取代了。

然而，穿越到今年，Common App 仍以更快速度增長。係統也越來越穩定，再沒有出現 2013 年的窘境。

而接受 Coalition App 的大學數目仍然隻有 100多所。（有信息說今年為(wei) 140 所。）

Coalition 的另一個(ge) 創辦宗旨，是為(wei) 低收入、少數族裔、或家庭第一代大學生提供支持。加入 Coalition 的大學需要滿足一定條件：畢業(ye) 生貸款額很低或為(wei) 零。畢業(ye) 率要高，尤其對於(yu) 低收入、少數族裔學生。這些嚴(yan) 格要求，也造成加入的大學數目較少。

接受 Coalition 的大學中，大多數學校同時接受 Common Ap。華盛頓大學曾是剩下的唯一隻接受 Coalition 的大學，今年也退出了。

社交媒體(ti) 上甚至出現號稱 the movement against the Coalition 反對 Coalition 運動。大學和升學顧問們(men) 呼籲，Coalition，好好看看你們(men) 的係統，哪裏能幫助申請人減少焦慮（這原是 Coalition 創辦初衷）。

今年 8 月，Coalition 棄用原平台，該用 Scoir 新平台。是否能解決(jue) 係統穩定問題，有待觀察。也許，這也是一些大學退出的原因。

2022-2023 Coalition 申請文書(shu) 題目 Essay Prompts（推薦字數 500-650）

1. Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.
2. What interests or excites you? How does it shape who you are now or who you might become in the future?
3. Describe a time when you had a positive impact on others. What were the challenges? What were the rewards?
4. Has there been a time when an idea or belief of yours was questioned? How did you respond? What did you learn?
5. What success have you achieved or obstacle have you faced? What advice would you give a sibling or friend going through a similar experience?
6. Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.

Common App，創立於(yu) 1975 年。當時申請大學，需要手寫(xie) 或打字填表。每一所大學表格不同，需要重複填寫(xie) 背景信息，重新填寫(xie) 文書(shu) 。

為(wei) 了讓申請更容易、更高效、更公平，美國 15 所私立大學（多為(wei) 著名文理學院）聯合起來，統一申請表格，稱為(wei) Common Application。這樣，申請人可以隻填寫(xie) 一份申請，複印出來，很方便地郵寄到更多學校。

隨著技術的引進，Common App 的目標擴大為(wei) ，讓申請超越 GPA 成績和標化考試分數。1998 年，網申係統開放。

2019-2020 年，1 百 10 萬(wan) 申請人遞交了 5 百 60 萬(wan) 份申請。近千所大學接受 Common Application 申請，包括大多數 Top 100 大學。在體(ti) 量上，Common App 仍然遙遙領先。

2022-2023 Common App 申請文書(shu) 題目，仍和去年一樣。Common App 說，全球疫情進入第 3 年，保持不變為(wei) 好。

1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
4. Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

Common App、Coalition App 兩(liang) 個(ge) 係統加起來，也隻能支持 1 千來所大學。美國大學有近 6 千所，美國之外還有更多。

一些以 STEM 專(zhuan) 業(ye) 著名的大學，比如 MIT，還有一些公立大學，比如 UC 加州大學等，隻采用自己學校的網申係統，Common App、Coalition App 兩(liang) 個(ge) 係統都不采用。

對於(yu) 兩(liang) 個(ge) 係統都接受的大學來說，會(hui) 同等對待，不會(hui) 更偏向哪一個(ge) 。

在申請大學的忙碌中，很容易把係統想像為(wei) 龐大而冷酷的機器。了解背後的故事，可以講給孩子，放平心態，做好思想準備。

2022-2023 申請季，關(guan) 於(yu) 申請係統，7EDU 給孩子和家長們(men) 的建議：

• 學校選擇之後，可以先看一下，想申請的學校接受哪個係統的申請。接受 Common App 的大學數目遠大於 Coalition。如果想申請 15 所學校，15所都接受 Common App，而其中隻有 5 所接受 Coalition，采用 Common App 會更高效。
• 如果需要使用 Coalition App，可以充分利用其係統開放的優勢，讓孩子從 9 年級就逐步填入信息，不要等到高中最後一年。另外，Coalition 的 Locker 功能可以存入文件和信息。相比 Common App 最多隻能申請 20 所大學，Coalition 沒有限製，理論上可以申請更多。Coalition App 要求學校盡力提供經濟援助。所以如果需要助學金或學費減免，Coalition App 可能更方便。
• Common App 每年 8 月 1 日開放。申請人可以在任何時間提前注冊賬戶。最好在升入高四之前的暑假注冊完畢。另外，在高三結束之前，可以請求老師寫推薦信。這樣，暑假期間，老師會有足夠時間來仔細撰寫。
