PART 01

Distant Mountains Call, and Love Follows
Puxi Campus G4–5
Charity & Service Learning Journey to Western Hunan
In the heart of July, beneath a canopy of lush green trees, eleven families from Grades 4 and 5 of the SHSID Puxi Campus, accompanied by four teachers, embarked on a four-day charity and service-learning journey to Yuanling County, Huaihua City, Hunan Province. This trip, a meaningful extension of the 2025 Spring Charity Fair, was carried out in partnership with the Hunan Honghui Education Foundation. Through immersive field visits, students and parents gained firsthand insight into the lives of the children they support, explored how charitable programs function, and experienced the tangible impact of philanthropy—proving that every act of kindness truly matters.
First Glimpse of Yuanling: A Prologue of Heritage and Hope
Formerly known as Chenzhou, Yuanling is rich in history and natural beauty. It once served as the political, economic, and cultural heart of the Xiangxi region. Home to timeless idioms like “Kua Fu Chasing the Sun” and “Old but Vigorous,” it boasts legendary sites such as Mount Eryou and the Jiemu River. Historic figures like poet Qu Yuan, philosopher Wang Yangming, General Zhang Xueliang, and writer Shen Congwen once left their footprints here.
After a four-hour ride from Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport, we arrived in Hunan’s largest county by land area. There was no time to waste. Ms. Shi Zhan led the opening briefing and walked us through the itinerary. Ms. Ren from the Honghui Secretariat outlined the guidelines for our fieldwork, and Ms. Chen, who oversees programs in Yuanling, introduced the county’s educational landscape. Students listened intently, taking notes as their responsibilities for the days ahead took shape.
Rural Boot Camp: Igniting Dreams
On July 19, we spent a full day at Nanmupu School, joining their summer camp activities. As the morning mist lifted, we made our way to Chenlong Pass—a key historic gateway between the Central Plains and the Southwest along the ancient Xiang–Guizhou post road. There, students teamed up with Honghui campers and spread out: some roamed through tea fields, guided by seasoned pickers who taught them how to identify the prized single-bud-with-one-leaf teas; others explored the remains of stone walls and timber fortresses, tracing the silhouettes of history; still others sought out stele inscriptions and pieced together the legend of the serpent that became a Loong.
Back at camp, students turned their research into four-panel posters on Historical Legends, Natural Ecology, the Tea Industry, and Cultural Tourism. Their confident and engaging presentations earned heartfelt applause. Later that afternoon, a special Parents’ Talk took place. Eight parents from various professional backgrounds shared life experiences—from cutting-edge oil technologies and facial recognition systems to personality card games, goal-setting strategies, overseas education journeys, and financial planning. These real-world stories opened new windows of possibility for every listener.
Throughout the day, our students ate, rested, and played football with their Honghui peers. Two “super dads” stole the show with their footwork on the field, becoming instant celebrities among the cheering children eager for selfies. Bonds of friendship grew with every pass and laugh.
Over Mountains and Rivers: Home Visits That Stirred the Soul
On July 20, the group split into four teams to visit families in Chiping, Fengxiangping, Madiyi, and Xiaojiaqiao townships. The mountainous, river-laced terrain turned each journey into an adventure—twisting roads, steep footpaths, even boat rides to reach some homes. Tucked away in remote valleys, the houses were modest, but the certificates covering the walls gleamed with the children’s grit and determination.
With mothers working far from home and fathers often in poor health, these Honghui scholars shoulder much of their family responsibilities with quiet strength. Despite the hardship, they radiate warmth. Disciplined and self-driven, many are class monitors, reporters, and student leaders. When asked about their dreams, their answers were clear: to attend Yuanling No. 1 High School, a springboard to top universities like Tsinghua and Peking.
That evening, each team gathered to reflect. One student called the visit a raw “life class,” moved by the chickens and piglets wandering freely in the courtyard. Another admired the phrase “jade forms under pressure,” seeing it embodied in the children’s quiet perseverance. One took careful notes from a top-scoring older sister, vowing to follow her path of relentless effort. These moments planted seeds of inspiration that will grow for years to come.
Where Thought Meets Action: A Spark of Insight
July 21 brought us to Yuanling No. 1 High School, where we joined two workshops in the Honghui Companion Camp. Workshop 1 introduced students to public deliberation. They explored the Borda Count and Condorcet Method, comparing them with Robert’s Rules of Order. Alongside Grade 10 Honghui campers, our students debated real-world issues—from penalties for tardiness to phones usage and waste management—experiencing the full process from proposal to vote.
Workshop 2, the Human Library, wove keywords like “Does choice trump effort?”, “Solo travel,” and “Courage through hardship” into living stories. “Butterfly in the stomach” reminded us that every voice counts. “Big Foot” shared how raising a chick taught harmony between people and nature. We listened as a village girl recounted her journey to becoming a department head in a top Shanghai hospital, as a shy student became a spirited professor, and how summer homework led to reflections on time management. The session ended with an impromptu hip-hop routine—proof that passion is the best teacher.
That afternoon, students explored Longxing Temple, a Tang Dynasty relic supported by four golden-nanmu pillars that have stood for 1,300 years. A master of Chenzhou paper-cutting demonstrated how a single snip could bring a flower to life. With scissors in hand, students felt the heartbeat of folk tradition and national pride. Each delicate cut was a window into China's cultural soul.
Echoes Across Mountains and Seas
This journey was more than an act of giving—it was a profound exchange of hearts. On the ancient stones of Chenlong Pass, our students deciphered history. In the homes of mountain children, they witnessed strength through struggle. At Yuanling No. 1 High School, they glimpsed the transformative power of education. And in the patterns of paper cuts and temple pillars, they felt the enduring spirit of Chinese civilization.
This dialogue, stretching thousands of kilometers, went beyond brief visits or material donations. It quietly dissolved geographic and cultural barriers, building a bridge of understanding, respect, and mutual learning between young hearts. The seeds of hope planted on this trip will help Honghui scholars reach for the sky, and will reshape the worldview of SHSID students—teaching them that the world’s challenges are their classroom, that responsibility is a calling, and that true abundance begins within. Like the flowing Yuan River, this experience will run deep in their character, lighting the way toward a better future.
Mountains and seas may divide us, but the spirit of education knows no borders. The story of love and growth continues.
