GRE Issue

The primary goal of technological advancement should be to increase people's efficiency so that they have more leisure time.

Although innovations such as video, computers, and the Internet seem to offer schools improved methods for instructing students, these technologies all too often distract from real learning.

Because the use of technology such as computers in classrooms for young students (aged 6-12) has led to many improvements in learning, some people hold the view that there should be no limit on the number of hours that young students spend using technology during the school day. Others believe that too much time spent using technology during the school day is harmful for young students and that their use of technology should therefore be limited to one hour or less per day. Which view do you support? Why?

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Children nowadays rely too much on technology, such as computers, smartphoness, and video games, for fun and entertainment; playing with simpler toys or playing outside with friends would be better for children's development.

Teachers at a high school think that some of their students are bored or uninterested in learning. In your view, which ONE of these actions that teachers can take will be most effective in increasing high school students' interest in learning? Why?

-Using technology in their classrooms more often

-Asking students to work more often in groups or teams instead of working alone

-Explaining how the lessons they teach in the classroom have a connection to events in the world outside the classroom

A university has money in its budget to do ONE thing to improve its facilities for students:

- It can either improve the quality of the technology (for example, computers and printers) that it provides for students. Or

- It can redesign spaces where students hold club meetings and gather with friends in their spare time to make these areas more comfortable and appearing.

Which idea do you prefer, and why?

Imagine that you work for a company that has money in its budget to do ONE thing to help its employees improve their work:

- it can either improve the quality of the technology (for example, computers and printers) that employees use,

OR

- it can redesign its offices so that employees will have more comfortable spaces to do their work and have meetings. Which idea would you prefer, and why?

It’s not a leap to think that...

e.g. The best evidence available now suggests that students should avoid laptops during lectures and just pick up their pens. It’s not a leap to think that the same holds for mid- dle and high school classrooms, as well as for workplace meetings.

heavy-handed

e.g.  it may seem heavy-handed to ban electronics in the classroom.

... with laptops, students can, in some ways, absorb more from lectures than they can with just paper and pen. They can download course readings, look up unfamiliar concepts on the fly and create an accurate, well-organized record of the lecture material. All of that is good.

Most college students are legal adults who can serve in the armed forces, vote and own property. Why shouldn’t they decide themselves whether to use a laptop?

Students with learning disabilities may use electronics in order to participate in class.

Laptops distract from learning, both for users and for those around them.

Those who had used laptops had substantially worse understanding of the lecture, as measured by a standardized test, than those who did not.

... students in the classrooms with laptops or tablets had performed substantially worse than those in the sections where electronics were banned.

[typing vs. handwriting] because students can type faster than they can write, the lecturer’s words flowed right to the students’ typing fingers without stopping in their brains for substantive processing. Students writing by hand had to process and condense the spoken material simply to enable their pens to keep up with the lecture. Indeed, the notes of the laptop users more closely resembled transcripts than lecture summaries. The handwritten versions were more succinct but included the salient issues discussed in the lecture.
