數據為(wei) 關(guan) 於(yu) 本科排名的部分 Columbia University incorrectly reported figures in two categories to the U.S. News & World Report college rankings, the school said Friday, confirming some allegations lodged by a math professor at the school earlier this year. In response to the concerns raised by Professor Michael Thaddeus on his faculty website, the school said in June that it would review past years’ data submissions and wouldn’t participate in this year’s U.S. News & World Report ranking of the nation’s best colleges.
有問題的數據包括1. 小班數量 2. 教師最高學曆 Columbia said on Friday that it had overstated how many small classes it has, as well as what share of faculty hold terminal degrees, both elements the rankings consider. Columbia tied with Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology last year as the No. 2 Best National University, but was later moved to “unranked” after U.S. News & World Report said the school “has been unable to provide satisfactory responses” to its inquiries.
可以看到US News 的美國本土綜合性大學排名上,Columbia 確實不見了,其他學校的名次保持不變,包括Yale 依然是第五
下麵是具體(ti) 哥大校方道歉內(nei) 容 “Anything less than complete accuracy in the data that we report—regardless of the size or the reason—is inconsistent with the standards of excellence to which Columbia holds itself,” Provost Mary C. Boyce said in a statement. “We deeply regret the deficiencies in our prior reporting and are committed to doing better.” She said Columbia had relied on “outdated and/or incorrect methodologies” to calculate class sizes and faculty degree figures, and that it has changed those methodologies for current and future data submissions.
同時周五,哥大自行公布了一係列數據 Also Friday, the school released two sets of numbers for what is known as the Common Data Set, a standardized set of figures that schools can voluntarily publish detailing information about student enrollment, graduation rates, financial aid and faculty, among other subjects. The sets break out figures like admission rates and scholarship amounts for the main and highly selective undergraduate programs—Columbia College and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science—and for the School of General Studies, which primarily enrolls nontraditional students and has a larger share of part-time attendees.

Columbia’s provost said the school will continue to release Common Data Set figures going forward, but that the value of its educational offerings “cannot be measured by common denominator-style metrics.”
