COURSE TOPIC: Foundations of Public Health

The Professor would like to tailorthe topic to the level ofthe students, so the syllabus can be

adjusted as needed. These details are subject to change at the professor’s discretion.

Course Description:

This interdisciplinary core course examines public health and healthcare in the US and globally using a social justice lens and emphasizing the interconnectedness of population and individual health. Using public health and healthcare delivery as the overarching framework, the course will cover foundational elements of public health, including, but not limited to, its history and impact, the importance of health equity and human rights, and how racism manifests and is perpetuated within public health and healthcare systems. The course will build a sense of community and instill a public health mindset among students learning and it will lay the foundation for students to work effectively as public health professionals on inter-professional teams.

Structure:

This course is broken up into four sessions, each spanning one week.

Schedule:

Session 1: Core Functions of Public Health

• Individual vs population health

• Ten essential services of public health

• Primary, secondary, tertiary prevention

• Introduction to determinants of health

• Social class, racism, discrimination and privilege in public health systems

Session 2: Healthcare Systems and Delivery in the US and Globally

• Approaches to healthcare

• Quality and coverage

• Implementation (e.g., cost, workforce)

• Regulatory systems

• Novel approaches to bridge healthcare and communities

• Social class, racism, discrimination and privilege in healthcare delivery

Session 3: Population Health: Past, Present and Future

• Trends in morbidity and mortality

• History of public health and impact of globalization

• Pragmatic challenges

• Diversity, equity, and inclusion

Session 4:Final

• Public health case:Take COVID-19 as an example

• Final project reveal

COURSE TOPIC: Immunology and Vaccination

The Professor would like to tailor the topic to the level of the students, so the syllabus can be adjusted as needed. These details are subject to change at the professor’s discretion.

Course Description:

Immunology is a highly dynamic field that impacts topical and emerging issues within both the biomedical and biological science disciplines.

This course will see you learn about the components, principles and mechanisms of a healthy immune system, and how they co-ordinate to mount safe and appropriate protection against infection. You will establish how the immune system can distinguish between self and non-self targets, how it can tune responses to protect against different types of infectious agents and how responses vary when these agents are encountered in different anatomical sites, such as in the skin, gut and lung.

Structure:

This course is broken up into four sessions, each spanning one week.

Schedule:

Session 1 Introduction to immunology

Acquired immunity- characteristics

Antigen, Haptens and Adjuvants, Antibody

Types of immunity: nonspecificphysiological and cellular barriers

Session 2 Cells and Organs of Immune system

Organs of immune system – primary and secondary

Cells of immunsystem

Humoral Immuneresponse

Session 3 Immuno-techniques

Introduction to Antigen-antibody interactions

Affinity, avidity, cross reactivity, Precipitation reaction

Radial immune diffusion, Ouchterlony double diffusion

Function of vaccination

Session 4 Finals

Final Project Reveal

Vaccination and its development issues
