網申係統的文書(shu) 題目很少有重大改變,今年也還是沿用去年題目。各學校的文書(shu) 題目可能會(hui) 有少許變化。
有一個(ge) 趨勢值得注意:
美國一些著名大學越來越關(guan) 注 Diversity of Opinion,也就是觀點上的多元化。
這是哥倫(lun) 比亞(ya) 大學近年新添的一題:
A hallmark of the Columbia experience is being able to learn and thrive in an equitable and inclusive community with a wide range of perspectives. Tell us about an aspect of your own perspective, viewpoint or lived experience that is important to you, and describe how it has shaped the way you would learn from and contribute to Columbia's diverse and collaborative community. 社交媒體(ti) 伴隨 Gen Z 成長。而社交媒體(ti) 上常見的,是把一個(ge) 完整故事,以極短篇幅剪輯解讀,將單一觀點極致化,以爆炸性速度發酵,引發強烈情緒。
忙碌的 Gen Z,常常被一個(ge) 大標題、一個(ge) 兩(liang) 分鍾視頻,而左右觀點。因為(wei) 一封電郵,否定掉一個(ge) 學校。因為(wei) 一句話,否定一位教授。
而這又是最多元化的一代,更敢於(yu) 挑戰固有思維,發出聲音。於(yu) 此同時,Gen Z 也抱怨,有太多人容易被他人之言冒犯到。
麵對來自不同地域、不同文化背景的老師與(yu) 同學,在出現不同、甚至相反意見的時候,能夠善意體(ti) 會(hui) 其中的細微差別,能夠以成熟而健康的方式,來參與(yu) 討論、進行交流。這才是大學在 Gen Z 中想要尋找的申請人。
從(cong) 這兩(liang) 個(ge) 題目可以看出,美國大學的文書(shu) 題目,看起來簡單平淡,其實,如何以區區幾百字,即體(ti) 現獨立思考,又能體(ti) 會(hui) 題目的幾層含義(yi) 及其文化背景,更能充分展示自己為(wei) 什麽(me) 是這些名校的理想人選,這裏,需要有很強的獨立思考和思辨性寫(xie) 作能力。
文書中需要羅列成就清單嗎?
不同的文書(shu) 輔導老師會(hui) 有不同看法。有的顧問說需要把自己最優(you) 秀的部分都羅列出來。但我們(men) 被哈佛、耶魯錄取的學生反饋,文書(shu) 主要講個(ge) 人故事,不要重複活動清單裏已經有的內(nei) 容。這樣的寫(xie) 法效果更好。
單講自己有什麽(me) 才華和成就,對於(yu) 需要閱讀大量申請的招生官來說,會(hui) 比較乏味。
我們(men) 會(hui) 輔導學員,即使問題沒有問,我們(men) 也應該問自己,從(cong) 這些成就中,自己真正學到了什麽(me) ,有什麽(me) 新的感受和發現,哪些對自己的成長最有幫助。
不同學生會(hui) 有不同側(ce) 重。某些學生的活動清單已經非常精彩,那麽(me) ,在文書(shu) 中就不用再強調自己有多麽(me) 優(you) 秀,可以用更加個(ge) 人化的故事,來更加立體(ti) 地展示自己。
UC 文書問題,每題最多 350 字。這麽少的字數,夠講故事嗎?
每年,UC 收到的申請多達 20 多萬(wan) 份。很多申請人成績優(you) 秀。所以,文書(shu) 非常重要,是能讓申請人脫穎而出的重要衡量標準。甚至有估算稱,文書(shu) 在對申請人的評價(jia) 中占比 30%。
挑選UC 文書(shu) 題目時要注意,4 題不應該互相重複。應該挑選那些與(yu) 申請人最相關(guan) 的題目,從(cong) 4 個(ge) 不同側(ce) 麵,綜合起來,最有效而立體(ti) 地呈現申請人的優(you) 秀和獨特。
每一個(ge) 問題的撰寫(xie) ,都應該簡短而精確。可以舉(ju) 例,但故事需要很簡潔,直述核心重點。
比如,關(guan) 於(yu) 領導力,需要非常清晰地展示,你認可的領導力是怎樣的,你是哪種類型的領導者,你如何展示你的領導力。字數少,可能隻夠寫(xie) 一個(ge) 例子。沒有空間去拓展、渲染。每一個(ge) 字都很重要,需要有意識地布局。
UC 加州大學文書(shu) 問題 Personal insight questions
1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time.
2. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.
3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?4. Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
6. Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.7. What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
8. Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California?
撰寫(xie) 文書(shu) ,不要急,可以盡早與(yu) 輔導老師開始頭腦風暴。值得投入大量時間,反複閱讀,聽取反饋,修改編輯。
Common App 通用於(yu) 1 千多所美國大學,Coalition App 的文書(shu) 問題和 Common App 很相似。可以先從(cong) Common App 文書(shu) 開始撰寫(xie) ,再為(wei) UC 做簡寫(xie) 版。各大學要求的額外文書(shu) 問題,也需要認真對待。
UC 要求的 Activities 活動部分,比 Common App 要長。所以,活動部分可以先從(cong) UC 開始。
請記住,大學給出問題,不是為(wei) 了抬高難度,而是想看申請人,如何應答。這是充分展示自己的最好機會(hui) 。
