Although it is not a requirement in declamation, most students begin their speech with a teaser.
A teaser is an attention getting device that hooks the listener. In declamation, instead of writing a hook, performers use a few lines from their piece. Teasers are usually short- no more than 30 seconds long.
After the teaser, students use a dramatic pause to signal its conclusion. Additionally, students will often drop their head/look down. When the dramatic pause is over, students lift their head up and begin their introduction. Upon completion of the introduction, students again use a dramatic pause and lowering of their head to signal their transition back to the original declamation.
Unlike original oratory, declamation performers traditionally don’t walk during their speech. Instead, students stand in the center of the room with minimal lower body movement. Performers can take steps if they choose to, but normally at transitions.
Students are encouraged to incorporate hand movement and gestures into their speech. However, declamation is not acting and characters are not performed in the speech. Performers are not expected to present the speech as it was originally performed. Hand movement and gestures should be natural and complement the performance rather than distract the audience.

Q
A
There is not a requirement that the original speech be a class or written by a famous person. The content of the declamation is not important to the judge’s scoring. The scoring is based on the students’ performance and the introduction they write.
Q
A
Unless the video from Rednote contains a transcript and was published it would not qualify as a declamation. Folklore might fit better in a storytelling speech event, not declamation.
Q
A
If the teacher only wrote the speech and never presented it themselves, it would not qualify as a speech. Self-published material would be ok as long as it was a speech performed by the original author.
Q
A
Yes, students should write an introduction to the speech themselves. Parents should not write the introduction for their children- that would be plagiarism.
The introduction must include the original author and the title of the speech. Beyond that it is up to the student to decide what to include in the introduction.
Most coaches recommend that the introduction include an explanation of the major theme of the speech and what the audience will learn from it. The best declamations are able to demonstrate the significance of their speech.
Q
A
Students can edit speeches that were more than 3 minutes long. We recommend that you delete parts that are less important or shorten sentences. However, changing the order of the sentences is not advised since it could confuse the audience and undermines the integrity of the original speech.
Q
A
